A whole new set of Dragon Riders will be in charge of the safety of the archipelago. They will explore further and discover even more new dragons while protecting their home.
Olvir is tall and lean with dark brown eyes and short brown hair. His left arm has a long horizontal scar from his first encounter with his Timberjack. His apparel consists of a long-sleeve, dark blue, linen under-tunic that fits snug to his body, with finger cut-outs at the end of the sleeves that act as a kind of fingerless glove. Over the under-tunic, he wears a short-sleeve, lighter blue, wool tunic that wraps across his body and is secured at the waist with a leather belt. There are many small pouches attached to the belt where he can store items, such as his money or herbs. He can typically be seen with a red hood that covers his head, face, and shoulders, or can be worn around his neck like a scarf. In colder weather, he wears a long wool cape that has long strands of straw sewn into the fabric to provide extra warmth. His pants are light tan and loose-fitting, with dark blue leg warmers covering his entire calf, and sheep-skin moccasins that tie at the ankle with a leather cord. Hidden under his outer tunic, he wears a necklace with a thin chain; a small, silver medallion engraved with the image of a Scauldron hangs from the chain. He never goes anywhere without his bow, which is usually slung over his shoulder with a quiver full of arrows. When not hunting, he has a large shoulder bag filled with provisions like food, clothes, and his sleeping roll.
Personality
Olvir is quiet and shy, especially in large groups of people. He can get very nervous and may start stuttering when he is really nervous. Much like his dragon, he prefers solitude over the hustle and bustle of the village. Although he is incredibly shy, he longs for friends and does his best to be friendly- oftentimes failing horribly at social interactions. He idolizes the Dragon Riders and dreams of joining their ranks, but he's aware that he's not a great fighter and has a dragon that won't let him ride him.
He likes to spend his time hunting, swimming, carving wooden statues, and hanging out with Oakthorn. He recently started drawing and loves to draw his favorite scenic spots around New Berk, and has been trying to draw Oakthorn, but the overgrown lizard refuses to hold still for him. Although he isn't particularly smart, he wants to learn how to write properly and start writing stories or poetry. He's a bit of a romantic and longs for companionship outside of his dragon, but his shyness gets in the way of any attempt to flirt. Whenever he sees a girl his face turns bright red and his voice catches in his throat. Rather than make a fool of himself, he generally avoids the opposite sex like the plague.
History
Family Tree - Unknown Family - Gunnar (Fisherman, Friend) - Yngvar Vestgeir (Woodcutter, Friend) - Sigrunn Vestgeir (Hunter, Friend) Olvir arrived on New Berk when he was around 8 years old. The boy was found on a broken piece of a ship hull, unconscious, just off the shores of New Berk. He was spotted by a fisherman and brought to the village where he was cared for until he awoke. When he regained consciousness, he had no memory of who he was or where he had come from, or how he came to be floating in the open ocean. The only thing on him that could identify his family was a silver medallion, engraved with a Scauldron, on a chain around his neck. A small search party was sent to the neighboring islands and the open water surrounding New Berk, looking for any signs of a shipwreck or the boy's family. After days of no success, it was decided that he could stay on New Berk until they found his family, or they came looking for him. Most of the families of New Berk were superstitious and viewed the boy as a bad omen. When no one offered their home to him, he made a home for himself in the rafters of the barn. That first night, he lay in his bed of straw and held the necklace tightly, hoping some kind of memory would return to him until he drifted off to sleep. He became obsessed with finding the origin of the necklace and its significance. The next few days he drifted around town, asking every passerby to help him. He asked the Völva, the Dragon Riders, merchants, visitors- anyone that had ever been outside of New Berk before- if they knew what it meant and where it might have come from. No one had any answers for him. With no one able to help him, he decided he would leave New Berk and search for answers himself. He began stealing anything he could get his hands on from the shops in the main square. Shopkeepers would catch him and chase him off, cursing him as he ran as fast as he could with his haul. Eventually, he was shooed away as soon as he was spotted anywhere near a shop or stall, and he was forced to move to the docks with the merchant ships. After a few days of being cursed and chased off by merchants, everyone began to avoid the strange boy with no memory and shooed him away from them if he came too close, afraid he would pick their pockets or give them bad luck. The fisherman who found Olvir took pity on him and offered to let him earn his keep, and buy things instead of stealing them, and promise that they could keep an eye out for his parents. Olvir eagerly accepted and was put to work on the man's small fishing boat. The two of them sailed the open sea around New Berk, casting and retrieving nets and occasionally checking nearby islands for any signs of people. Although his hope of finding his family waned as days turned to weeks, he was enjoying his time with the fisherman. His name was Gunnar and he was an older Viking who had never been married- well, never married to a woman; he claimed he was married to the ocean and preferred the sea over dry land. As much as he enjoyed his time with Gunnar, being on the water didn't quite sit right with Olvir, and he never got his sea legs. Gunnar suggested he may be more at home on land and suggested Olvir go work with his friends, a Viking couple who hunted and provided lumber to the village. The next day, Olvir visited the home of Yngvar and Sigrunn, but nobody was home. A neighbor suggested he check the forest nearby or come back in a few days. He had never ventured into the forest of New Berk and was anxious to go, but gathered his courage and followed a small dirt path through the trees. As the dull roar of the village faded and gave way to the sounds of the forest, Olvir felt himself relax. The smells and sounds of the forest felt like home to him, stirring up memories he could reach but not quite hold. As he followed the path, he came upon a clearing of cut trees and a man, about the same age as Gunnar, sitting on a stump and drinking from a waterskin. Olvir cleared his throat meekly, causing the man to jump just a little. When he asked what the boy was doing in the forest, Olvir explained that Gunnar thought the couple might teach him and give him work. Yngvar eyed him carefully for a moment before instructing him to grab an axe and start chopping. Yngvar and Sigrunn became like family to Olvir. They taught him how to chop wood, hunt, butcher meat, cure leather, sew garments, and many other things. They taught him how to survive off the land. He would stay with them at their home, but the three spent most of their days in the woods earning their keep during the day and camping at night. Olvir finally felt at home for the first time since he arrived on New Berk. Five years after he arrived on New Berk, he was hunting on his own when he heard the sound of a distressed dragon. He rushed off to help, finding an adolescent Timberjack who had a tree fall on his tail, pinning him to the spot. Without hesitation, he tried to help remove the log. In the struggle, the Timberjack's razor-sharp wing sliced Olvir's arm, leaving a long gash down his forearm. Ignoring the pain and blood dripping from the wound, he finally dislodged the log and the dragon took off. He was intrigued by the Timberjack; he had never seen a dragon like that before. When the dragons returned to New Berk, he had spent time studying them, but he had only ever seen the more common species like Deadly Nadders, Terrible Terrors, and Monstrous Nightmares. He continued to come back and try to make friends with the dragon. He'd often bring food, toys, and other things he knew that most dragons liked, but the Timberjack barely acknowledged them. He was chased off again and again, but he never gave up. One day, as he was observing the dragon from a distance, he realized the dragon was rubbing its back against a tree trunk in an attempt to scratch an itch it just couldn't reach. Realizing that this could be his chance, he approached cautiously and hid behind the tree, and inched closer to the dragon until his fingertips could just reach its hide. The Timberjack was like butter in his hands as he began scratching its hide until it realized that he was there. With a loud roar, the Timberjack chased Olvir away yet again. Knowing the dragon's "weakness" now, he just had to find a way to use it without getting torn to shreds. He spent much of his days watching the dragon, and would often try to approach while it slept. After months of this routine, the dragon began to tolerate the human and eventually stopped chasing him away altogether. Their friendship began to take off from there. As he grew, the two grew closer and began hunting and gathering lumber together.
Oakthorn
Male
Sharp
Timberjack
Appearance
Like many Timberjacks, Oakthorn's coloration resembles that of the forest he calls home, with a mixture of light tan and dark brown scales. His body is long and slender, with a long neck, stout head, and a long pointed tail. Short, dark brown spines line his back from the back of his head to the base of his long tail. Sitting upright on his tail, he stands almost 12 feet tall, towering over Olvir. His body is slender and serpentine-like, and his size is mostly made up of his massive wings. Though his wings appear thin and fragile and seem to drape delicately around his thin body, they can be deadly. The edges of his wings are razor-sharp, capable of cutting through tree trunks effortlessly, and the tough scales that cover his body are capable of sustaining incredible damage. Each wing has a hook at the joint and tip that faces either direction, which he uses as claws, or to walk on since he has no limbs. These hooks are incredibly sharp and can be used as more delicate cutting instruments. His head is adorned with two long, spiraled horns, tendrils protruding from his chin, and intense yellow eyes- closely resembling a Monstrous Nightmare or Typhoomerang at first glance.
Personality
Oakthorn is a stubborn and sensitive beast but is extremely loyal to his human companion. This overgrown lizard doesn't really like being told what to do, and will typically respond with a puff of smoke or irritated growl when forced to do something. Sometimes, though, he helps Olvir with hunting and gathering (when he feels like it) and enjoys slicing and cutting things for the hunter. Although he doesn't like to be put to work and follow orders, he has a strong bond with his human and enjoys his company. On cold nights, he will form a tent with his huge wings and allow Olvir to snuggle up beside him. He prefers the solitude of the forest to the noise and chaos of the village and refuses to join Olvir on his trips into town. Oakthorn is extremely skittish and spooks easily, especially when on the ground with his movement limited. He is distrustful of other humans and often reacts violently to being disturbed. He is fiercely protective of his home and his companion and will do everything in his power to protect both. However, his trust in Olvir allows him to tolerate new people- as long as they don't get too close. Like other dragons of the Sharp class, Oakthorn is extremely vain and easily offended. He prefers not to be touched by strangers- unless he's getting a good scratching- and refuses to be ridden by anyone. Despite his overall grumpy attitude, he can be playful as a puppy when he's in his forest home. He enjoys warm days alone with Olvir, and melts like spring snow when getting a good scratching.
